CPRKids is a wonderful resource for First Aid for children and babies. They have excellent articles that are relatable to every parent.
One of their resources that I highly recommend to help prevent choking is:-
The shape of the food is extremely relevant. When it comes to choking Prevention is definitely better than the cure! In saying that, choking accidents still happen and it’s so important to know what to do in the event of a choking episode. There are 4 key S’s that might help to prevent it.
They include:-
• Shape
• Sitting down
• Supervise
• Search
SHAPE:- Cut foods in appropriate size shapes according to age/development. Round food such as grapes/cherry tomatoes/large blueberries should be cut into quarters. Otherwise cut foods into finger length shapes, this helps with the pincer grip when picking the foods up.
Avoid foods like popcorn/marshmallows/hard lollies /whole nuts in young children
SIT DOWN:- Sitting down to eat meals as a family not only reduces the risk of choking but also provides social interaction with everyone at the table.
SUPERVISE:- Always watch your little one while eating. They should be in sight of you always. Choking is silent!
SEARCH:- Check around the house for small objects that can be put in the mouth. It’s always a great idea to get down on your hands and knees to get the perspective of your little one. Small objects like coins/erasers/button batteries/marbles/beads and small toy parts should be kept out of reach.
