Circulation
Good circulation is important, as we need blood to carry oxygen and nutrients around our body to nourish our tissues and organs.
Poor circulation is a common problem that can be caused by a number of things, including; diabetes, smoking, peripheral artery disease and Raynaud’s disease.
It can cause symptoms such as muscle cramps, digestive issues, pain, cold hands and feet and numbness.
There are a few things you can do to improve your circulation, this includes:
Diet
- Cayenne, Garlic, Cinnamon, Turmeric and Ginger:
- Cayenne pepper contains a compound known as Capsaicin which stimulates the release of nitric oxide, which dilates blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more freely around the body. Capsaicin is also used in pain-relieving creams, as it stimulates blood flow to the area. All of these other spices act in the same way as Cayenne to improve circulation. Try incorporating some of these spices into your diet.
Herbs/Supplements
- Ginkgo: Naturally thins the blood and increases its flow to various parts of the body. Ginkgo increases nitric oxide levels, which dilates blood vessels, allowing blood to pass more easily through, therefore improving circulation.
- Fish Oil: Also promotes the release of nitric oxide, which dilates the blood vessels. Fish oil helps to stop platelets clumping in your blood, which can help to inhibit blood clots.
Lifestyle
- Exercise: This is one of the best things to get your circulation going, as it strengthens your heart and moves blood around the body.
- Massage: helps to improve circulation through the cardiovascular and lymphatic systems.
- Increase fluid intake: Keeping well hydrated is essential for maintaining healthy circulation, as our blood has a very high-water content. The more hydrated we are, the less thick the blood is and the more easily it passes through the vessels.
- Stop smoking: Smoking decreases the amount of blood that is able to flow through the vessels, as it constricts them.
