What is Cradle cap?
Cradle cap (seborrheic dermatitis)is a scaly, oily yellow crust that appears on a baby’s scalp/ eyebrows. It occurs due to the production of too much oil in the skin. This extra oil stops the natural shedding of skin and therefore builds up causing the crust. Cradle cap is very common in babies. It isn’t contagious or dangerous to your baby. Sometimes their hair might become matted due to the cradle cap but once treated there are no long term concerns.
What does Cradle cap look like?
Cradle cap presents as a pale yellow, oily crust that is raised on the scalp. At times it can spread to the eyebrows.
The scale is hard to peel off and it’s not a good idea to try.
It’s not itchy/painful and doesn’t concern the baby. If it is itchy and treatment doesn’t help, it may be eczema or another skin condition and will need a diagnosis from the doctor.
How to treat cradle cap.
- At times cradle cap doesn’t need anything to treat it.
- A more natural approach is recommended using baby oil and massage, leave overnight and wash off the next day. Gentle brushing with a soft brush.
- If the crust doesn’t disappear, Moogoo Scalp Cream is highly recommended- as per instructions.
- Do not force the crusts off the scalp, this may cause bleeding and potential for infection.
- If redness/ bleeding appears or the cradle cap doesn’t improve over a two-week period, contact your GP and further treatment might be required.
- If you’re concerned as to whether it’s cradle cap or maybe something else, definitely contact your GP/pharmacist.
