Our Baby Nurse Laura, goes over some quick tips on keeping your baby entertained during self distancing. Check out below!
Babies need to be entertained while they are being kept indoors. There are many ways to keep them busy and have fun too. Play is so important for their development in language, self expression, social awareness and also helps to build dexterity and muscle control. The following ideas are listed below:
All important TUMMY TIME...
One of the most important things to do daily with babies is plenty of time on their tummy. This might not always be too enjoyable for the baby but is so important for their strength. Make this an activity in itself, sing songs and talk to baby. Provide lots of colourful toys for them to look at and even a mirror to provide self awareness. Tummy time can be done a couple of times during the day. You can alternate and put them on the chest or across your lap.
Give baby a massage
Provide a soothing massage after a deep, warm bath. This is ideal for relaxation before bedtime and perfect for establishing a routine. If you are unsure about how to massage, there are many online tutorials to learn from. Massage is perfect for skin to skin contact with your little one. Check out a quick tutorial here.
Blow Bubbles and let them watch or pop them!
Bubbles are a great way to entertain babies, they can watch them fall down and pop or as they get older than can pop them. Just be careful the bubble solution doesn't make the floor slippery.
Make and play Sensory Bottles..
Sensory bottles are easy to make at home. Fill a bottle with rice/oats/hundreds and thousands/water with food colouring, anything that you have at home that will create colour and sound. make sure you seal the cap tightly to save having little accidents.
Finger/Hand Puppet Play.
Finger puppets are ideal for communication and fun play. You can make these from material you might have leftover or otherwise a 'lost' sock might be useful to create a puppet. Sew little bits of ribbon, colourful pieces of material and anything else you might have at home. Then you can make up stories that are fun and adventurous.
Play PEEK A BOO
Peek-a-boo is guaranteed to bring grins and giggles! You can use your hands to hide behind a book. Babies have no concept that you're still there and hence the surprise when you come back
Read a book
Babies are never to young to read a book to. Board books are ideal with the touch and feel pages. Include a variety of books each day.
Look at photos
Looking at family photos is a wonderful activity, especially when they recognise the people in them.
Sing Nursery Rhymes and Songs
Music time is a wonderful way to develop so many skills. It helps build language development, allows self expression, learns to identify body parts and skills such as clapping ect, social awareness, teaches order and sequence and helps to build dexterity and muscle control.
You don't have to be a brilliant singer to entertain your little one. They will delight in your voice, no matter what! Some fun ones include:
The Wheels on the Bus
CLAP CLAP CLAP YOUR HANDS
IF YOU'RE HAPPY AND YOU KNOW IT (You can change the action, also - Shake, wave, snap reach up high ect.)
The Baby Hokey Pokey
Hopefully some of these activities will give you ideas to help entertain your baby and keep them happy, espcially in times of inside play
