Know Your
Bone Mineral Density
Our Bone Density Scanner is an advanced ultrasound bone densitometer designed to assess bone mineral density (BMD) and evaluate osteoporosis risk. Unlike traditional dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scans, which rely on X-rays, our scanner employs ultrasound technology to measure bone density, typically at the heel (calcaneus).
What does our Bone Density scan measure?
Bone Mineral Density (BMD) Measurement
The machine measures the density of the heel bone (calcaneus), offering valuable insights into overall bone health. By focusing on this specific area, the scanner can effectively assess bone mineral density (BMD) and identify potential risks of osteoporosis. This non-invasive and painless method provides a reliable indication of your bone health status, allowing for early detection and proactive management of bone-related conditions.
T-score
A T-score is a measurement used in bone density scans to compare an individual's bone mineral density (BMD) to that of a healthy young adult of the same sex. It helps determine the risk of fractures and the presence of osteoporosis or osteopenia. Here's how T-scores are interpreted:
Normal: A T-score of -1.0 or above indicates normal bone density.
Osteopenia: A T-score between -1.0 and -2.5 indicates low bone density (osteopenia), which is a condition that precedes osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis: A T-score of -2.5 or below indicates osteoporosis, a condition characterised by weak and brittle bones that are more susceptible to fractures. The T-score is a critical tool for diagnosing bone health and determining appropriate interventions or treatments.

Z-score
A Z-score is another measurement used in bone density scans to compare an individual's bone mineral density (BMD) to the average BMD of people of the same age and sex. Unlike the T-score, which compares BMD to a healthy young adult, the Z-score provides a more age-specific assessment. Here's how Z-scores are interpreted:
Z-score of -2.0 or lower may suggest a need for further medical evaluation as it indicates that the bone density is significantly lower than the average for someone of the same demographic.

Quantitative Ultrasound Measurements
Speed of Sound (SOS): This measures the speed at which ultrasound waves travel through the bone. Higher speeds generally indicate denser and healthier bone.
Broadband Ultrasound Attenuation (BUA): This measures the reduction in the ultrasound signal as it passes through the bone. Higher BUA values are linked to better bone quality.

Osteoporosis Risk Assessment
The machine assists in identifying individuals at increased risk of osteoporosis and related fractures by thoroughly analysing their bone mineral density (BMD) values. This comprehensive assessment helps in early detection and enables timely intervention to prevent potential bone health issues.
