Separation anxiety starts to become evident in babies over the age of 6 months. It is defined as the fear of being separated from their parents or caregivers. They become anxious and cry and cling to them. It is a normal part of development. Between 4–7 months of age, babies develop a sense of “object permanence.” They are realizing that things and people exist even when they are out of sight. (12-18 months is when it appears to peak) New faces and strangers also upset them. These anxieties are normal for this age range and there are some techniques that might help to combat their fears.
Separation anxiety is real and it’s best to avoid separation during this phase.
What can I do to help my child?
- If it’s a new environment for your baby, for example, a relative’s/ child care/ preschool; make sure to spend time with them to help make them feel comfortable. It will take time for them to adjust to the change
- Special toys/ comforters/ blankets are also helpful to help them feel safe
- Inform the relative/ staff about the separation anxiety and what you are doing to help aid the anxiety. Support from others is important
What can I do to help when leaving my baby?
- Short time away from your baby is important. Increase the time amount, accordingly
- Always tell them when you’re leaving and when you will be back to pick them up
- Do a fun activity that they will enjoy doing with you
- Say a quick ‘goodbye’ and leave, do not stay longer than required
- Don’t show any emotion when you leave, this might trigger your little one to react
Some simple tips to start at home.
- Start by going in other rooms away from your baby
- Encourage them whilst you’ve been away for a short period
- Praise them for the time you are away from them
- Leave them with others in your home, for example grandparents are a great starting point
Separation anxiety can become more evident when your baby is unwell, teething and new environments or changes they are not familiar with. Often remaining calm and not reacting to the situation is important for a positive outcome.
