Did you know that Ginkgo is a prehistoric herb, that was around when the dinosaurs roamed the earth? It has been traditionally used in Chinese medicine for brain disorders, circulatory disorders and respiratory diseases such as asthma. Ginkgo has strong antioxidant properties, which makes it a powerful anti-inflammatory, it thins the blood, improves circulation, enhances oxygen and nutrients to the brain and reduces stress on our brain cells, therefore improving mental performance. Ginkgo is great for helping with memory recall.
Brahmi has a traditional use in Ayurvedic medicine as a nerve herb. It has been traditionally used for everything from nervous exhaustion to learning difficulties. It helps with memory recall and concentration and assists with anxiety and thyroid function.
Our brains are made up of mostly fat. So, it is important we support the structure and function of the brain by consuming good, healthy fats, such as fish oil.
Fish oil protects against oxidative damage and inflammation. It supports the nervous system, it can assist with mood disorders, dementia and it helps with the development of the nervous system in babies when taken by the mother.
Fish oil is composed of two main actives; EPA and DHA. DHA has been shown to improve memory in older adults. EPA helps to reduce inflammation. Depression has been associated with inflammation, so fish oil can be very beneficial in those who have depression.
Did you know that the brain and gut share some of the same tissue? We have a major nerve known as the Vagus nerve, which connects the gut and the brain. Serotonin is also made in your gut. It is a mood stabilising neurotransmitter that is responsible for wellbeing and happiness. Our gut bacteria can also affect our mood and emotional state. Studies have shown an improvement in stress and anxiety in people who have taken probiotics. Taking the right strains of probiotics can be really helpful in those suffering with anxiety and depression.
B Vitamins are the nutrients of the nervous system. They are needed for stress support and energy production. Some B vitamins have been found to be in higher levels in the brain. Vitamins B6 and B12 can improve memory function, if you are deficient. B12 and B9 deficiency can cause memory loss.
